Dr MJ Khan, Chairman, ICFA completed week long China trip with several field visits and meetings in Beijing, including Chinese Academy of Agriculture Sciences, Sinochem Ag, China Seed Trade Association and China Food & Ag Machinery Association. Many lessons to learn from China in food and agriculture sector. Despite having almost 20 million hactare less arable land than India, its agriculture GDP $ @ 1 trillion, is bigger than India and USA put together. The village township enterprise (VTE) model is worth emulating, by which they reduced population load on agriculture and with that manpower expanded manufacturing. Agriculture was mechanised for greater operational and costs efficiencies. Seed and Agchem sectors were promoted massively, to focus initially on domestic agriculture with low costs solutions and later to exports. Global Trade events China has taken lead and Government heavily subsidises to attract global buyers and partners. Large food processing units put up and value chain strengthened, helping connect farmers with markets, something which GOI through Operation Green is aiming to do now. Hybrid rice development gave China food security almost around the same time when India achieved Green Revolution. India however seems to be leading in Agri Startups, which can greatly revolutionise the farm sector efficiency and offer IT based solutions in tech transfer, market connect, PHM, VCD and marketing. It is time for India and China to collaborate for global food security and complement each other to fight hunger and malnutrition.
